Bunratty Castle

Visit the acclaimed 15th iconic Bunratty Castle

The most complete and authentic castle in Ireland, The site on which Bunratty Castle stands was in origin a Viking trading camp in 970. The present structure is the last of four castles to be built on the site.

The present structure, was built by the MacNamara family around 1425. Circa 1500, Bunratty Castle came into the hands of the O'Brien clan, the most powerful clan in Munster and later Earls of Thomond. Many occupied the castle over the year however it was restored to its former medieval splendour in 1954,  and now contains mainly 15th and 16th century furnishings, tapestries, and works of art, capturing the mood of those times.

Bunratty Collection

Finest collection of medieval furniture in the country

Bunratty Castle was in ruins in the mid 20th century and was in danger of being demolished for stone. Viscount Gort, a mediaevalist bought the castle in 1953 for a nominal sum, saving it for posterity. Encouraged by a small group of individuals, including the archaeologist John Hunt, they set about returning the castle to its former splendour.
