Experience the thrill of medieval combat this June as the Battle for Bunratty returns to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park on Sunday, June 7.
With action taking place from 10am to 5pm, teams of highly skilled knights will descend on Clare for the Battle for Bunratty, bringing with them the intensity and spectacle of a true medieval foot tournament. Spectators will witness full contact, non-choreographed medieval combat, featuring fearless warriors wielding blunted swords and colourful shields.
The day features intense melee battles known as Buhurt, where teams of armoured warriors fight to be the last standing as they use strength and strategy in a content of endurance, determination and tactical knowledge. These battles take place from 10am to 1.30pm and 2.30pm to 5pm specifically, and recreate the spectacle of a medieval foot tournament as would have been seen on the grounds of the castle 600 years ago when it was first built.
Visitors are invited to choose their favourite knights to cheer on as they go toe to toe in duels and team clashes – whether it’s the Knights of Munster, the 1316 team of Athenry, the Dublin-based Fragarach or the Knights of North Down.
Events Manager at Bunratty Castle & Folk Park, Marie Brennan said, “We are delighted to welcome back the prestigious Knights of Munster to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park. Fighters attending have participated and earned success at tournaments around the world, including representing Ireland at world championships as far afield as Hungary and Mexico in recent years. Knights of Munster Captain, Brendan Halpin, is currently preparing to lead Team Ireland at the 2026 IMCF world championships in Denmark, where he will be competing in longsword and sword & buckler.”
The atmosphere is further brought to life by the Medieval Encampment where guests can meet the knights and their squires, learn about their way of life and marvel at the weaponry. Discover how they train and prepare for battle, learn how their customs, crafts and traditions have shaped modern society, and get a close look at authentic armour and weapons.
